Miami stands as the undisputed cruise capital of the world, welcoming millions of ocean cruisers each year through its state-of-the-art PortMiami facility. Located on Dodge Island just minutes from downtown, this bustling departure hub offers unmatched convenience for travelers heading to tropical destinations. With sailings starting at just $124 and over 1,900 upcoming voyages, Miami provides access to more ocean cruise options than virtually any other port on the planet.
The port's prime location makes it the natural gateway to the Caribbean, which dominates the departure schedule alongside popular routes to Mexico and even transatlantic voyages to the Mediterranean. Major cruise lines including Carnival Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, and Royal Caribbean International maintain significant year-round operations here, with flagship vessels like Wonder of the Seas, MSC World America, and MSC Seaside regularly calling Miami home. The port's modern terminals feature efficient check-in processes, covered parking garages, and easy ground transportation connections to Miami International Airport, located just 8 miles away.
Whether you're a first-time cruiser drawn to the convenience of flying into a major hub or a seasoned sailor who appreciates Miami's combination of pre-cruise attractions and cruise variety, this port delivers on every front. The surrounding area offers countless hotels at various price points, world-class dining in neighborhoods like Little Havana and Brickell, and the option to arrive a day early to enjoy South Beach or the vibrant Wynwood arts district. The tropical climate means comfortable embarkation weather year-round, though summer months bring afternoon showers that rarely interfere with boarding.

Miami is one of the busiest embarkation ports in the world, and for open-minded couples it pairs a world-class clothing-optional beach with an evening scene that lives well outside the South Beach postcard. Give yourself a hotel night on either end of the cruise: there is enough here to fill it without ever needing a car for more than half an hour.
Lifestyle Scene
A genuine scene: a long-running on-premise club near the airport, plus an established Broward club an hour north. None of it is on South Beach.
Clothing-Optional
Haulover is a county-designated clothing-optional beach and among the best known in the United States.
Adult Nightlife
A real on-premise scene exists, but it's inland and up in Broward, not on the beach strip.
Easy From The Ship
Everything described here sits within a 20-45 minute drive of the pier.
Haulover Beach Park is a Miami-Dade County park, and its clothing-optional section runs along the northern third of the beach, between lifeguard towers 12 and 16, a arrangement in place since 1991. Clothing is expected everywhere else on the property, including the parking lots and the pedestrian tunnels that get you there without crossing Collins Ave. Aim for North Lot or Lot 1 and go early on a summer Sunday, since both fill up.
Miami's on-premise lifestyle scene is real but concentrated away from the beach: one long-running club sits near the airport in Doral, and a well-established, membership-based club is up in Tamarac, close to an hour north near Fort Lauderdale. Neither is a walk-out-of-your-hotel option, so treat either as a deliberate night out with a car booked both ways, not a casual after-dinner stop.
Downtown's Park West district and the Fontainebleau on Collins Ave both host large-scale nightclubs that run late, one of them close to round-the-clock across most of the week. These are mainstream venues with cover charges and dress codes, good for a big glossy night out, but they're not lifestyle spaces and shouldn't be mistaken for one.
For a topless-tolerant pool and spa without any lifestyle overtones, an adults-only property on Belle Isle near South Beach fits well and keeps you close to the pier. If clothing-optional is the point of the stay rather than just the beach, a small adults-only hotel in Hollywood, roughly 40 minutes north, is the only property in the area that runs clothing-optional throughout, and it also sits conveniently between both South Florida cruise ports.
A rental car or rideshare is the practical answer to almost everything here. Haulover is 20-30 minutes from most South Beach and downtown hotels; the Doral lifestyle club is a similar distance from the beach but in the opposite direction, toward the airport; the Tamarac club and the Hollywood hotel both run closer to 40 minutes to an hour. None of this is on a ship's clock since you're staying over, but budget the drive time honestly rather than assuming anything is a quick hop.
Know Before You Go
The Honest Take
If clothing-optional beach time is what you're after, Miami delivers about as well as any port in the country, and Haulover alone justifies the trip. The lifestyle side is thinner and more scattered than people expect from a city this size, with the real venues sitting inland in Doral or up in Tamarac rather than anywhere near the beach, so build in the drive rather than hoping for something walkable. Pair a Haulover afternoon with a considered evening choice, mainstream glitz or a proper club night further out, and an embarkation night here works well; just don't expect South Beach itself to carry any of this.
Places Mentioned
The Rules Here — Miami-Dade County, Florida, USA
Florida Statute 800.03 makes it an offence to be naked in public "in a vulgar or indecent manner", but it carves out anyone "merely naked at any place provided or set apart for that purpose". That exception is what makes Haulover work: Miami-Dade County, which runs Haulover Beach Park, has designated the northern third of the beach — between lifeguard towers 12 and 16 — as clothing-optional, and has done since 1991. On that stretch of sand, being nude is lawful.
Everywhere else it is not. Clothing is required in the rest of the park, in the car parks and the pedestrian tunnels, and on every other public beach in Miami-Dade including all of South Beach. The exception covers nudity, not behaviour: sexual activity and lewd conduct remain illegal there exactly as anywhere else, and photographing other people without their consent will get you confronted or removed.
Female toplessness sits in a grey area outside a designated area and is legally risky on any public beach. Where you will reliably see it is on private property that permits it, such as certain hotel pool decks — that is the owner's choice, not a public right, and it does not extend to the sand in front of the hotel.
This is general information, not legal advice. Rules change; check before you travel.

Before even getting into the terminal, we were met with a very unprofessional, rude and angry Carnival employee. That set the tone. Bonaire was great, not commercialize. Spa was nice but lacking. Overall other passangers were friendly, but la...
