OOTD etiquette for formal night on Oasis?

First cruise. Formal night on Oasis has me wondering what "formal" really means. Not doing tux/gown, but don't wanna be underdressed. Are dark jeans and a button-down gonna get me side-eyed in the MDR? Or is it more relaxed nowadays. Wanna pack right.

The requirements for "Formal Night" have relaxed. It is really about you looking your best, whatever that means for you. I have never seen anyone turned away.

Ate in MDR last Oasis cruise. Saw plenty of dark jeans w/collared shirt, you'll be fine.

skip jeans, go for dark chinos. looks sharper, still comfy.

yeah, i think the "you'll be fine" advice is pretty spot on. last cruise i was on, formal night in the MDR was a total mix. i wore black jeans, a decent button-down, and some clean shoes and blended right in. definitely saw everything from full tuxes to guys in polo shirts. nobody batted an eye at either. but since you're packing, here's a specific thought: consider the vibe you're after. if you're hoping to get some nice photos or maybe hit up a specialty bar later where the crowd tends to dress up a bit more, leaning slightly nicer might work in your favor. a pair of dark chinos or dress pants dont take up much more suitcase room than jeans, and they give you that extra notch up without going full suit. just a more polished look if you care. honestly, i'd be more concerned with footwear than the jeans. a pair of actual dress shoes or even clean, plain sneakers in good condition make a bigger difference than people think. beat-up sneakers with a nice shirt is the combo that might actually get a few looks, in my experience.

Don't worry! Formal night is much more relaxed these days. Dark jeans and a nice button-down shirt should be perfectly fine. Some people dress up, others keep it casual. Just wear what makes you feel comfortable and enjoy your first cruise! 😊🚢

I'd skip the dark jeans, honestly. Last formal night we did on MSC, I wore slim black chinos and a textured button-down with the sleeves rolled, and my wife wore a jumpsuit with heels. We felt perfectly in place, but noticed the few people who went full denim did get some lingering looks—nothing confrontational, just that silent cruise-ship judgment. It's less about being turned away and more about feeling like you're in the right scene. A concrete tip: if you're avoiding a suit, choose a shirt with some heft or a pattern, and shoes that aren't sneakers. It elevates the whole look instantly from "casual" to "considered." Also, the dining room lighting is surprisingly harsh; a cheap, thin shirt can look it. For packing, I'd plan one versatile "sharp" outfit that works for any evening you might feel like dressing up. That way, you have the option without over-packing. Do you tend to enjoy dressing up for a night out, or is it purely a check-the-box thing for you? That might decide it.
