solo cruiser looking to meet people, how to start?

hey everyone, sailing solo on the carnival dream for the new years cruise next year. im really outgoing but sometimes walking into those big mixers alone feels a bit intimidating. ive done the solo meetup thing before and it can be hit or miss. whats the best way for a solo person to break the ice and actually connect with others onboard? like, are the bars better for chatting than the pool deck? should i just hang around the arcade or comedy club and hope to strike up a conversation? im totally up for meeting people for fun, maybe more if the vibe is right, but you gotta get past that first awkward hello. any tips from other solo travelers on how youve made friends or found your crowd on a ship would be awesome. especially interested in how it works on carnival, since thats where ill be.

For me it was going to the solo meetups and go out for drink with them. Regular cruise events work best as an ice breaker.

the solo meetups are a good start, especially on carnival where they usually schedule them right before a group activity. but you mentioned they can be hit or miss, and i totally get that. i find the trick is to show up a few minutes early and just chat with the host or the first other person there before the 'official' start. makes it way less of a 'walking into a packed room' vibe. for me, i skip the pool deck for meeting people – everyone's either with their group or zonked out on a lounger. bars are better, especially the smaller ones like the alchemy bar on the dream where they do craft cocktails. you end up talking to the bartender or the person next to you waiting for a drink. but my absolute go-to is the trivia events. you can just walk up to a team that's short a person and ask if they need one more. instant in, and you have something to focus on besides the awkward hello. piano bar nights are also solid, especially if you know the songs. people sing along and its a more relaxed, communal feel. ever tried just posting on the facebook group for your sailing before you go? sometimes solos will arrange to meet for the muster drill or the first lunch. takes the edge off day one.

Try a late-night lounge, people are way chattier after 10 pm.
skip the official events and just grab a seat at a busy bar during trivia or karaoke. youll be right next to people who are already in a social mood.
